Events Scheduled on Campus for Disability Awareness Month
April 1, 2016

April is Disability Awareness Month, and Sonoma State University is offering several events sponsored by Disability Services for Students in collaboration with other departments. All events are free and open to all faculty, staff and students.

Wednesday, April 6

"Many Types of Minds," noon to 1 p.m., The Learning Center (Salazar 1040)
An opportunity to learn about individual strengths and how to use those strengths in and outside of the classroom.

Friday, April 8

"Read and Write Gold for Beginners," 10-11:30 a.m. & 1-2:30 p.m., Stevenson 2044
Come learn about a new, free tool available for the entire SSU community that assists with proofreading, research, grammar, notetaking, reading comprehension, and more. There are two opportunities, participants need only to attend one of the above listed times.

Tuesday, April 12

Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) presentation, 1:30-2:30 p.m., International Hall, Room 203
The Department of Rehabilitation is a state-run agency that helps people with disabilities reach vocational goals. This is a great resource for anyone working with, will work with, or is a person with a disability.

Tuesday, April 19

"When You Feel Like a Lemon Among Oranges: Transforming Difference," 4-5 p.m., The Learning Center (Salazar 1040)
An opportunity to learn and discuss how differences can be transformed into strengths.

Thursday, April 21

Adaptive Climbing Clinic, 10-11 a.m., Rec Center Climbing Wall
An introduction to some of the adaptive equipment the Rec Center has available.

"Welcome to Inclusivity" 101, 2-3 p.m., Salazar 1051
Learn general information about types of disabilities, accessibility, inclusive language, and various resources.

Friday, April 22

Monday, April 25

Documentary film night, 6-8 p.m., Darwin 102
Films include "Uplifting Down: Nigeria," about working together to accept, educate, and inspire people's beliefs about Down's Syndrome; and "Surfing the Spectrum," about a local program in San Rafael where children with special needs have the opportunity to learn how to surf (Q&A with filmmaker Steven Gatlin follows screening).
