The Sonoma State Seawolves women's soccer team captured its first conference title and remained undefeated in league play with a 2-0 win at home against CSU East Bay on Oct. 26. The No. 3-ranked defense in the nation recorded its eighth consecutive shutout to record the win in front of a large crowd gathered to celebrate Senior Day. The Seawolves improved to 11-1-3 overall and remain undefeated in conference play at 8-0-2.
Goals by Sara Van Wagoner and Alex Sifuentes in the first half, and Sonoma's suffocating defense did the rest, denying CSU East Bay a shot attempt in the first half, and finishing with a 16-5 advantage on shots on goal for the game.
Ashley Luis, who entered the weekend ranked second in the nation in goals against average, didn't have to make a single save on her way to her 12th shutout of the season. She is now tied for the school's single-season record with Kelli Robinson (1985) and Carolyn Wellman (1993). Her goals against average of 0.25 is currently the top mark in school history as well, besting Wellman's 0.33 from 1991.
Sonoma has finished first in the division six times since joining the CCAA in 1998, most recently in 2012. The CCAA Champion was previously determined by a postseason tournament, but after a change in 2014 the team with the best conference record in the regular season is now recognized as "CCAA Champion."
The Seawolves close out the CCAA regular season on Halloween at Cal Poly Pomona, with playoff scheduled to begin the following weekend.
