Sonoma State University’s Dance Program will showcase five new experimental and contemporary works from nationally acclaimed guest artists at the program’s annual concert this Thursday.
Spring Dance 2019 will highlight the creative dances of guest artists Larry Arrington, Monica Bill Barnes & Company, Erin Landry and SSU Dance faculty Christine Cali and Kristen Daley. The Sonoma State Dance Alumni Collective “CMCC” also will make a guest appearance.
“This incredibly diverse and talented group of guest artists offers our students a glimpse into the professional world of dance,” said Kristen Daley, director of the Dance Program. “Each of the dance pieces that you will see is distinctly different in style and aesthetic sensibility.”
This year’s guest performers all have experience in creating their own unique work and performing it on the highest stages. Larry Arrington formed her own experimental performance group out of San Francisco in 2008 labeled “Larry Arrington Dance.” Performing across the Bay Area, Arrington has created six original works exploring the notions of the performing body. The Monica Bill Barnes & Company is a contemporary American dance company that has created work from its own rulebook — dancing to radio interviews or leading choreographed exercises in an art museum. Erin Landry is a professor of dance at Cypress College and has performed professionally with the Philadelphia Dance Company.
Spring Dance 2019 will have a total of six shows, with the first being held on April 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Evert B. Person Theatre. Tickets range from $10 to $17 with Sonoma State students getting in free. Tickets can be purchased online or at the event. For more information visit Spring Dance 2019.
