Sonoma State University sports update, March 8-15. Women's golf captures tournament title, women's tennis suffers first loss of the season and baseball loses to Academy of Art.
WOMEN'S GOLF
Led by the fourth-place finish of Samantha Oliva, who fired a two-over-par 146, the Sonoma State women's golf team captured its second tournament title of 2015-16, a seven-shot victory over runner-up Western Washington on March 8 at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout hosted by Cal State East Bay at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo. The Seawolves scored a program-record 592 (+16) in the 36-hole event.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
After taking a 2-1 lead into singles play, the Sonoma State women's tennis team saw its perfect season come to an end, dropping five of its six singles matches to lose 7-2 to No. 13 Azusa Pacific on March 14 at the Cougar Tennis Center in Azusa. The No. 26 Seawolves fell to 9-1 this season. Before the loss, the Sonoma State women's tennis team had achieved a record-breaking 9-0 start to the season with a victory over No. 50 Stanislaus State in on March 12 Turlock.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
Despite grey clouds and a wet track, the Sonoma State women's track and field team got seasonal bests from a handful of student-athletes on March 12 at the Chico Invitational. Angelique Lopez was the Seawolves' top finisher, earning 4th and 5th place finishes in the sprints.
SOFTBALL
Jordann White went 5 for 6 with two doubles and an RBI in the two games combined, but the Sonoma State softball team found itself on the losing end of a pair of one-run games, 3-2 and 2-1, to No. 23 UC San Diego on March 11 at the Triton Softball Field in La Jolla. The Seawolves dropped to 11-9 overall and 8-6 in the CCAA.
Sarah Langley crushed the first two home runs of her collegiate career on March 10, and Emma Ryan also belted her first career home run in game two, but the Sonoma State softball team was forced to split a doubleheader with 23rd-ranked UC San Diego at Triton Softball Field in La Jolla.
BASEBALL
After going on a great run in conference play the past two weekends, the Sonoma State baseballteam ran into some trouble on March 8 against the Academy of Art in non-conference play, where a late comeback attempt came up a bit short in a 4-3 loss at Laney College.
WOMEN'S WATER POLO
Carleigh Robinson scored twice and Taylor Plorin tied her season-high with 14 saves in the cage, but the Sonoma State women's water polo team suffered a 12-5 loss to No. 19 Hartwick on March 11 at the Dr. G. Edward Rudloff Pool in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves see their six-game win streak snapped, falling to 8-9 this season.
MEN'S TENNIS
The Sonoma State men's tennis team competed at the Golden State Invitational, hosted by UC Davis on March 13 at the Spare Time Indoor Tennis Center, but the Seawolves lost to NCAA Division I Sacramento State, 7-0, falling to 1-12 this season.
After holding a 2-1 lead after doubles play, the Sonoma State men's tennis team lost all six singles matches to suffer a 7-2 loss to No. 21 BYU-Hawaii on March 12 in Azusa.
The Sonoma State men's tennis team had started a busy weekend on a high note, besting Hope International 6-3 at the La Habra Tennis Center on March 11. The Seawolves won two of three matches in doubles before sealing the victory with four wins in singles.
