Sonoma State University sports update, March 22-29. Women's golf performs well at invitational, men's golf finishes third and women's water polo loses close game to Santa Clara.
WOMEN'S GOLF
Samantha Oliva paced the Sonoma State women's golf team for the second straight tournament, scoring a nine-over-par 153 to tie for fourth place with four other players, helping the Seawolves to finish No. 6 out of 18 teams with a 632 (+56) at this week's Otter Invitational at Bayonet & Blackhorse Golf Courses in Seaside on March 22.
MEN'S GOLF
Led by the eighth place finish of Brandon Lee, the Sonoma State men's golf team finished No. 3 out of 11 teams at the 66th Annual SoCal Championship, hosted by UC San Diego at Carlton Oaks Golf Club in Santee on March 22. Lee fired rounds of 78, 75 and 71 to card a 224 (+8) for the tournament, six swings back of co-medalists Lee Geargart of Chico State and Christopher Pham of Cal State Dominguez Hills.
WOMEN'S WATER POLO
Trailing 7-3 with 4:29 remaining in the contest, Carleigh Robinson, Noelle Herrera and Nicole Groat scored on three consecutive possessions to cut the deficit to one goal, but the Sonoma State women's water polo team missed a potential game-tying shot on its final possession before visiting Santa Clara ran out the clock in the 7-6 loss on March 24 at the Dr. G. Edward Rudloff Pool in Rohnert Park.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
Angelique Lopez ran the 400 meters for the first time in her collegiate career on March 26 and ran a 58.40, good enough for No. 8 in a field of 30. The Sonoma State women's track and field sprinter who has seen her name climb up the all-time list in the 100 and 200 meter distances, stretched out to the quarter mile and turned in the fourth-fastest time in school history at the American River Invitational.
SOFTBALL
After the suspension of the doubleheader on March 25 due to darkness, the Sonoma State softball team finished off their weekend series with the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes with two victories in their three games, winning the weekend series in the process.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Jensyn Warren earned an upset victory in straight sets at the top of the singles lineup over the No. 31 player in Division II, but it would only be one of two points scored by the Sonoma State women's tennis team in a 7-2 loss to No. 22 UC San Diego on March 27 at the SSU Tennis Courts in Rohnert Park.
In the middle of their busiest home stretch of the season, the No. 24 Sonoma State women's tennis team picked up a 9-0 win over visiting Hawaii-Hilo on March 26.
The Sonoma State women's tennis team won 7-2 on March 25, dispatching visiting Westmont, at the SSU Tennis Courts in Rohnert Park. The duo of Katherine Long and Karlee Budge got the day off on the right foot with an easy 8-2 victory over their opponents at No. 3 doubles.
The Sonoma State women's tennis team suffered its first shutout loss of the season, 9-0, at the hands of No. 2 BYU-Hawaii on March 22 at the SSU Tennis Courts.
MEN'S TENNIS
The Sonoma State men's tennis team got out to a great start on March 26, winning two of three doubles matches, only to see the visiting Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans come back for a 6-3 win in Pac West action.
The Sonoma State men's tennis team lost to No. 17 UC San Diego on March 24, 9-0, at the SSU Tennis Courts in its second-to-last home match of the season.
