L.A. jazz and recording musician Ron Dziubla and New York Philharmonic trombonist Joe Alessi are the featured guest artists in the spring concert season by Sonoma State University's department of music.
Ron Dziubla's visit, hosted by SSU jazz studies director Doug Leibinger, includes stops at the Jazz Forum at 1 p.m. Feb. 22 in GMC 1029, and a concert with the university jazz bands at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 23 in Warren Auditorium. Admission at the door includes a suggested donation of $15 for the Mel Graves Fund.
Bay Area native Joe Alessi, widely regarded as one of the finest working trombonists alive, presents a solo recital at 7:30 p.m. on May 11 in Evert B. Person Theatre. The music department, housed in the Green Music Center's music education hall, will also present three faculty chamber music recitals, the annual faculty composer's concert of new music, and performances by the University Chorus, Chamber Singers, Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra.
The spring musical, running from Feb. 9-19 in Evert B. Person Theatre, is Oklahoma! presented in conjunction with the departments of music, theatre arts and dance.

Wind Power, 4 p.m., March 4, GMC 1028
Chamber music featuring wind instruments! Works by Claude Debussy, Hilary Tan, Francis Poulenc and Robert Schumann. Studio faculty performers include Kathleen Reynolds, flute; Roy Zajac, clarinet; Daniel Celidore, oboe; Ruth Wilson, horn; Judiyaba, cello; Richard Riccardi and Marilyn Thompson, piano; plus guest musicians.
Faculty Composers Concert, 7:30 p.m., April 13, GMC 1028
This popular annual event, hosted by Sonoma Musica Viva director Brian Wilson, features the latest music by SSU faculty-composers. Works include a two-trombone piece by George Marsh, a song cycle by Richard Riccardi and the Sonoma County premiere of Brian Wilson's trio for violin, horn and piano entitled "And Ezra The Scribe Stood Upon A Pulpit.' Guest musicians include Randy Weiss, violin, Meredith Brown, horn, Marilyn Thompson, piano and Carol Menke, soprano.
Student Performances are Free and Open to the Public
In addition to major ensembles, students perform in smaller groups including guitar ensemble, brass ensemble, percussion ensemble, music theatre scenes workshop, Latin band, concert jazz ensembles, string orchestra and instrumental and vocal repertory recitals.
