Rohnert Park, CA — Dr. Anna Valdez, chair of the Sonoma State University’s Nursing Department, along with her colleagues at Nursing Mutual Aid, was recently honored by GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ Equality (previously known as the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association) with the 2020 Global Hero Award.
Nursing Mutual Aid was presented with the award on Sept. 23, 2020 at the GLMA Nursing Summit in recognition of their innovative and tireless dedication to amplifying the voices of nurses and fighting for social justice, including racial, queer, environmental, and economic justice.
“I am humbled and deeply honored to be recognized alongside my dedicated colleagues in the Nursing Mutual Aid collective. I am looking forward to continuing my work addressing injustice and systems of oppression in nursing and society at large,” said Valdez.
GLMA is the world's largest and oldest association of LGBTQ healthcare professionals and is committed to ensuring health equity for LGBTQ and all sexual and gender minority health professionals in their work and learning environments.
Elizabeth Wade, dean of the School of Science and Technology, added “We are delighted to have Dr. Anna Valdez honored in this way. Dr. Valdez is deeply committed to social justice and to expanding access to health care to all populations. We are excited to see what she will do next for nursing education at Sonoma State!”
